Manual Transmissions
A vehicle’s manual transmission is responsible for changing the gear ratio. It is a collection of gears and bearings, and unlike an automatic transmission, gives shift command to the driver. Subject to high levels of friction, high temperatures and high loads, these
moving components need a high quality lubricant to keep heat and wear to an absolute minimum, providing transmission longevity and performance.
AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are specifically engineered to meet the high temperature/high load demands of today’s hard-working manual transmissions. They resist the damaging effects of heat and oxidation at temperatures much higher than conventional lubes can, meaning they won’t thicken or develop sludge even under severe operating conditions. And because they are synthetic, fuel economy increases and heat and friction are dramatically reduced.
Temperatures in the transmission are reduced by 20ºF to 50ºF, and component wear is kept to an absolute minimum. AMSOIL synthetic lubricants come in a variety of viscosity grades. Modern manual transmissions may require gear lube, engine oil or automatic transmission fluid. Consult your owner’s manual to decide which lubricant is recommended for your vehicle.
Automatic Transmissions
While a manual transmission shifts gears by the command of its operator, an automatic transmission acts as an energy transfer media and shifts automatically based on a variety of variables, including speed and load.Making use of a hydraulic system, in addition to a network of gears and bearings, the lubrication requirements for an automatic transmission are slightly different than those of a manual transmission, requiring a lubricant of different characteristics. Because automatic transmissions are commonly subjected to extensive idling, frequent shorts trips, cold temperature operation substained hot weather operation and trailer towing, it is important they are protected by a high quality lubricant.
AMSOIL ATF provides automatic transmissions with superior friction protection and performance over awider temperature range than conventional automatic transmission fluids, avoiding breakdown
and maintainingits viscosity in temperature extremes. It resists thermal and oxidative degradation, ensuring coolerand smoother transmission operation and longer transmission life. In addition, AMSOIL Synthetic ATF provides increased fuel economy and lasts up to three to five times longer than conventional fluids, providing superior protection for the long haul.
Differentials
When turning a corner, the outer wheels of a vehicle must travel a greater distance than the inner wheels. This is made possible by the vehicle’s differential. Comprised of bevel gears and hypoid gears, they actlike a balance arm, establishing constant equilibrium oftorques and forces between the left-hand and righthanddriven wheels. This balance also comes into playwhen the driven wheels encounter different road conditions. The transferable torque of the vehicle is limitedby the lowest friction coefficient between the tires androad surface. The wheel with the higher friction coefficient remains stationary, while the other spins at low torque. Subject to heat, wear, high loads and an incredible amount of pressure, the differential requires a premium lubricant that can stand up to the stress.
AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lubes provide limited slip performance and are formulated with extreme pressure additives, effectively countering the high pressure that differentials are faced with. Its
synthetic chemistry protects in the most extreme temperatures as well, remaining fluid in cold temperatures and providing the immediate lubrication components need during start-up. At a temperature of 0ºF, conventional lubricants may take as long as 18 minutes to flow and lubricate the front pinion bearing of a differential, while AMSOIL 75W-90 is flowing in as little as 45 seconds.
Transfer Cases
Transfer cases are installed on four-wheel drive vehicles, distributing the drive power between the front and rearaxles. Transfer cases in off-road vehicles also have a selectable ratio for extreme inclines, low speeds andhigh tractive power. For optimum protection and performance, the transfer case requires a high quality light viscosity fluid. AMSOIL ATF is commonly recommended for transfer cases. It maintains its viscosity and protecting capabilities in both high and low temperature extremes. Infact, AMSOIL ATF offers four times the low temperature fluidity required by today’s specifications.
